Ever since 1988, Republicans have been looking for "the next Reagan." All of the GOP candidates want to be classified as "Reagan Republicans." Well, I think I found the next Reagan, and here's a news flash: He already lives in the White House!

According to news reports, U.S. President George W. Bush "has no recollection" of videotapes of CIA interrogations of some al Qaeda suspects or of plans to destroy the tapes.

No recollection? Can't remember? Let's flash back to, say, 1987, and the Iran Contra affair hearings. President Reagan appeared before the Tower Commission on December 2, 1986, to answer questions. he was (allegedly) plagued with "poor memory," because the questions were regarding details that occurred months and years prior.

The report published by the Tower Commission, known as the Tower Commission Report, was delivered to the President on February 26, 1987. It criticized the actions of Oliver North, John Poindexter, Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and others. It did not determine that the President had knowledge of the extent of the program, although it argued that the President ought to have had better control of the National Security Council staff. It heavily criticized President Reagan for not properly supervising his subordinates or being aware of their actions. The U.S. Congress issued its own report on November 18, 1987, indicating that "If the president did not know what his national security advisers were doing, he should have." [2]" The congressional report stated that the President bore "ultimate responsibility" for wrongdoing by his aides, and his Administration exhibited "secrecy, deception and disdain for the law." I've been saying this for a while, but I have to put it on the record if I want to look smart come next August's GOP convention: Mike Huckabee will be the nominee of his party.

Romney? Too slick. Giuliani? Too many ethical questions. Fred Thompson? Was expected to make a big splash and instead did a belly flop. Besides, several southern states will be in play (Virginia, Florida, Arkansas) and a southerner on top of the ticket would be a big help.

I'm still holding out hope that Edwards will win the Dem nomination...
